How To SEO

"Organic Results" are actual humans clicking on your page. Not robots, search engines, or otherwise paid ads.

Organic Results are some of the toughest to get, as your site must first get popular. From their you can watch the organic traffic numbers climb.

Let’s first make sure we understand the absolute basics of SEO,
including why it matters and how it compares to other marketing channels.

Google Traffic
Why is SEO important?

Most web traffic comes from Google’s organic results

Ranking
Ranking higher is the most touted benefit of SEO, but rankings are really just a means to an end. Many of the real benefits of SEO are traffic-related.

What are the benefits of SEO?

Consistancy
Ranking in search engines usually leads to both consistent and passive traffic. That’s rarely the case for mediums like social media and email marketing that often result in traffic spikes that quickly fade to nothing.

How do you get your website on Google?

SEO helps you to rank higher, but you can’t rank higher if Google doesn’t even know your website exists in the first place.
Google will eventually find your website on their own, but there are a couple of key benefits to manually submitting your site:

Faster discovery. Most new websites don’t have any backlinks from other websites, so it might take time for Google to discover them.
Improve your website. Google Search Console gives recommendations on how to improve and optimize your website.

The first step to submitting your website to Google is to find your sitemap.

by land or by sea

Sitemaps are files that list all of the important pages on your website. You can usually find yours by typing this URL into your browser:
www.YourWebsite.com/sitemap.xml
If it’s not there, go to website.com/robots.txt where it’ll usually be listed.
If it’s not there either, you probably don’t have one. Check out "AHREFS" guide to creating a sitemap.
The second step is to create a free Google Search Console account and submit your sitemap.

Setting up for SEO success

Getting your website indexed by search engines means you’re in the race, not that you’re likely to win. That’s where SEO comes in. SEO is an ongoing process that, if done well, increases your chances of winning over time.

It’s much easier to do SEO well when your website is properly set up for SEO success.
Pro Star Planet is a company that works hard at this success.

They will massage your website weekly by making regular changes causing the Search Engines to notice that your are updating your site.
They will talk or blog, make links to, and submit your website to other search engines as well as BING and Google.
And they understand the "What it takes" in advertising your company!

Get a good domain

Don’t panic if you’ve already registered a domain. It’s probably perfectly fine and won’t hinder your SEO efforts. But if you haven’t chosen one yet, it’s worth keeping these two attributes of a good domain in mind:

Domain Names

Domain Name Standards

1. Domain name

Firstly, don’t worry about including your keywords. Your domain doesn’t need to be MarksAutomotiveAndRepairShop.com for search engines to understand what it’s about.

Here’s are a few attributes of a good domain:
It is the name of your business
It has no hyphens
It is short and memorable

When conducting a search on Google and aiming to exclude certain terms from the results, it's common to use the minus sign ("-"). For instance, if you search "Red Truck for sale -dealer" Google will look for red trucks for sale while omitting listings from dealerships in its organic search results. However, incorporating a minus sign into a domain name is generally not recommended.
This practice deviates from the norm and can lead to confusion or difficulty in remembering and accurately typing the domain. It's essential to keep domain names straightforward and user-friendly for the best online presence.

2. TLD
TLD stands for top-level domain. It’s the part after the name like .com, .org, or .net.

Google’s John Mueller says your TLD makes no difference for SEO. However, for most businesses, .com is usually best if you can get it because it’s the most recognizable and trusted.

It’s probably best to stay clear of TLDs like .info and .biz that tend to be associated with low-quality websites, but it’s not the end of the world if you have one. You can still build a legitimate website that ranks.

Use a website platform

Most people don’t code their website from the ground up in HTML and CSS. They use a website platform. These are pieces of software that allow folks with little or no coding skills to create a website, manage content with ease, and take care of boring technicalities.

Hosted platforms

Hosted Platforms offer a comprehensive solution by providing web hosting, customizable templates, and user-friendly content management tools, eliminating the need for coding skills.

Pro Star Planet is an excellent option for those seeking a hosted platform solution. With Pro Star Planet, you can rest assured that your website's SSL registrations, coding, and maintenance are taken care of for you.

Other examples of hosted platforms include Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, and Weebly.

Self-hosted

Self-hosted platforms allow you to manage and create content without needing to know how to code. The main difference is that you need to host and install them yourself, often on slower servers which can make your website appear sluggish.

Some examples of self-hosted platforms include WordPress, WooCommerce, Joomla, and Drupal.

Which kind of platform should you choose?

According to most SEO professionals, using a self-hosted, open-source platform like WordPress or coding your own website from templates or scratch tend to have better performance in terms of website speed. However, WordPress can become slow due to the thousands of plugins that are often left in the completed product, causing the website to become sluggish or slow.

Fortunately, Pro Star Planet uses the latest technology in their servers and maintains some of the highest internet speeds available in the Southeast. Their Upstream backbone is currently running at 2 Gigs, with an average usage of only 14 percent.

Speed makes the difference in whether a customer clicks the back button or not.

Use HTTPS
Nothing is worse for visitors than their personal data being susceptible to hackers. Always encrypt your site with SSL/TLS.

Choose an appealing design
Nobody likes a website that looks like it was designed in the ’90s. So while there’s no need to redesign your website every six months, it should at least be visually-appealing and reflect your brand.

Make sure it’s mobile-friendly
Google says more searches are now performed on mobile than desktop, so it’s critical that your website is as pleasant to use on mobile as on desktop. We here at Pro Star Planet have yet to see this. During the year of 2021, 37% of all incoming searches were mobile. The rest were tablet, PC, and Laptop evenly.

Use a readable font size
People browse the web using all kinds of devices nowadays. Make sure your content is readable across the board.

Avoid intrusive pop-ups and ads
Everyone hates ads, but sometimes you might need them. If that’s the case, the key is to avoid intrusive ones. Google has some advice on what is and isn’t okay here.

Make sure it loads fast

Page speed is a confirmed ranking factor on desktop and mobile. But this doesn’t mean your site needs to load lightning fast. Faster is better, sure, but Google says this factor only affects sites that “deliver the slowest experience to users.” You can normally tell when someone has used a Wordpress Website as the pages  can take 10 seconds or longer to load when you click a link within the website. Hardcoding is the fastest websites on the internet.

Both visitors and search engines need to be able to navigate your site easily and intuitively, which is why it’s important to create a logical hierarchy for your content.
The easiest way to do this is to sketch out a mind map.
Website Map

Each of the branches in your mind map will become internal links, which are links from one page on a website to another.

Internal links are crucial for UX and SEO for a few reasons:

-They help search engines find new pages. Pages without internal links are rarely found and indexed.
-They help pass PageRank around your site. PageRank is the foundation of Google’s ranking algorithm that tries to determine the “value” of a page.
-They help search engines understand what your page is about. Google looks at link anchors and surrounding text for this.

A Link Anchor is the name of the link that you are displaying....

Example. < a href="http://example.com/">This is the Anchor

The only part of the code above that shows is "This is the Anchor" but it links to http://example.com/

Page Structure is key!

Use a logical URL structure

URLs are important because they help searchers to understand the topic of a page.

Many website platforms let you choose how to structure your URLs.
These are the five main options for URLs in WordPress:

Plain: yourwebsite.com/?p=123
Day and name: yourwebsite.com/2021/03/04/Sales-basics/
Month and name: yourwebsite.com/03/04/Sales-basics/
Numeric: yourwebsite.com/865/
Post name: yourwebsite.com/Sales-basics/

If you are a coder, simply make sure that the page name is your folder or php file that you are linking to.
https://yourwebsite.com/Sales.php

If you’re setting up a new site from scratch, it makes sense to go with the clearest and most descriptive structure. That’s probably Post name.

Using dates in URLs is also bad practice because you might want to update the posts in the future.

If you’re optimizing an existing website, it’s probably best not to change the URL structure—even if it’s not ideal. Doing so can break other more important things that will have a more profoundly negative impact on your SEO.

Keywords

Keywords are now the words used MOST in your website.

Keyword research

Keyword research involves identifying the search terms that potential customers use, evaluating the potential traffic these terms can drive to your site, and assessing the difficulty of ranking for them. Here's a breakdown of each step:

Identify keywords
To create pages that rank in search engines and attract valuable traffic, you need to know what your potential customers are searching for. Brainstorming words and phrases that define your industry is a great starting point. For example, if you run an online computer store, you may consider terms like:

computer, PC, mac, laptop, macbook

However, search engine algorithms now tend to ignore the meta tag

Check your website SEO

SEO maintenance services typically come at a monthly cost, which is standard in the industry. While there are some free options available, it's important to note that they often have ulterior motives, such as promoting companies for a commission. One such free service is SEOBILITY, which provides speed scores for websites hosted on platforms like GoDaddy, HostGator, and Blue Host. However, it's important to take these numbers with a grain of salt, as they may not accurately reflect the true performance of your website.

Make a QR Code for a quick link to your Website

Simple place your URL into the box and click Generate. We will make you a QR CODE that can be used anywhere for a quick link to your website address.
